Natural phenomena🗻

Penitentes are the formation of snow found at heights. This phenomenon of penitentes only occurs in places between Chile and Argentina, namely snow on a high and pointed surface that is oriented towards the sun due to strong winds in the Andes mountains.

These ice clots are usually cut off from glaciers between 1.5 to 3 meters thick by 5 to 10 feet. More than 4000 meters below freezing, during the day the sun's temperature begins to smooth the ice (but not melt).

There are penitentes which cover large areas of land, such as ice forests. And there are also only a few square meters.

Penitentes formed from glaciers. glaciers turn into penitentes because of wind and sun rays. As a result, some of the glaciers sublime or evaporate without passing through the melting process.

Why doesn't the glacier sublime all, but only partially?
Because when the glacier gets hot, the initial sublimation forms hollows. When the basin is exposed to sunlight, the basin reflects heat to the surrounding basin wall. The ice in the basin becomes faster and clogs up and makes the basin deeper, leaving a thin slice of ice left over.
